In the stone-kin chambers under the eastern district, seven containers have been waiting four hundred years for the right hands. The first holds a teaching stone that shows Edric his pieces are still making themselves, all of them, connected through the Imprint like roots beneath separate trees. The second holds a bowl that shows him the valley has been accumulating its own Imprint for five hundred years, organized around a potential that has finally arrived.

A shield-bearer needs something that extends his twenty-one years of knowing what’s coming outward into the space around him. A cartographer realizes the map she has been making her whole career is incomplete in a specific and solvable way.
