Harry Whittle, a sixteen-year-old son of a dry, emotionally distant butler in a senior Foreign Office official’s London household, tries to join the army in 1916 but is rejected because of his age. As punishment for his recklessness, he is sent to work on a wealthy Devonshire estate, where he befriends Blanche, the estate owner’s troubled daughter. Haunted by the mysterious disappearance of her younger brothers and their governess five years earlier, Blanche’s fragile mind teeters on the edge.
One day, while wandering the estate’s forest, Harry and Blanche are suddenly and inexplicably thrust into the unsolved mystery of her brothers’ fate. Together, they face a surreal journey of extraordinary and haunting events — events so bizarre they threaten sanity itself. Within the rigid confines of Edwardian society, Harry and Blanche struggle to uncover the truth and find a path back to normality.
