Before the city had a name, before the streets and rooftops and the windows left slightly open… There was water. Not the kind that floods or drowns. The kind that glows. It flowed beneath the earth like a quiet pulse. It learned the language of the roots, it memorised the rhythm of rain, it listened to the mountains breathe and the oceans stretch. It was not seen. For centuries, it guarded the balance of the wind, fire, vegetation, water, animals, seasons. It had no hands so, it choose them. Three at a time… The first trio learned quickly. The next carried the weight. And when the cracks began to form in the balance, not in the sky, not in the rivers, but in the hearts of those who carried it… The Shimmer began to look again. This time, towards the rooftop. Towards the three girls, who thought they were only waiting for summer. They were wrong.
