Bilbo’s Big Adventure: There and Back Again

An Unexpected Guest

Bilbo Baggins lived in a comfortable hole beneath the hill and was a little, quiet hobbit. He loved peace, comfort, and food. There were many of cakes and tea in his home, along with cozy furnishings and warm light. Gandalf, an old wizard, knocked on his circular green door one day, though.

The following day, Bilbo was just getting settled for a pleasant afternoon when his quiet house was unexpectedly crowded with visitors! Thirteen dwarves showed up at his house, led by Thorin Oakenshield, who was solemn and proud. They sang of forgotten kingdoms and dragons, of mountains and treasure. Bilbo listened as a sensation he couldn’t quite place stirred in his heart.

“We need a burglar,” Thorin insisted. “A little, shrewd person to assist us in recovering our riches from the dragon Smaug.” Bilbo swallowed. A dragon? Treasure? Burglar?

Something inside Bilbo urged, “Say yes!” despite his nervousness. After much deliberation, he finally packed his belongings, inhaled deeply, and left his cozy house to embark on an adventure he had never dreamed of.

Troll Trouble

One evening, the crew noticed firelight in the distance as darkness began to creep across the land. “Trolls!” one of the dwarves, Balin, shrugged. They were hungry, but cautious.

“Perhaps I might sneak in and steal something,” Bilbo said, eager to demonstrate his burglary skills. Bilbo approached the campfire, where three huge, unsightly trolls sat cooking meat and complaining, very slowly. Their voices echoed like thunder, and their skin was the texture of stone.

Bilbo attempted to rob one, but was seized by the troll’s enormous hand! As he raised Bilbo into the air, the troll yelled, “What’s?

“A small rabbit?” remarked another. A hobbit, the third exclaimed.

“Should he be boiled or roasted?”

The dwarves rushed in to assist before they could make up their minds, but they were all seized by the trolls. As if there was no hope left, a voice resounded throughout the clearing. “Dawn’s approaching!” Gandalf exclaimed, deftly mimicking the tone of a troll.

As the first rays of day peeked over the hills, the trolls frightened and turned to face the sky. The trolls transformed to stone with a loud crackling sound!

With a sigh of relief, the group investigated the trolls’ cave and discovered great weapons, food, and riches. The company proceeded on their quest, stronger and wiser than before, when Bilbo took a little dagger that was the perfect size for a hobbit.
