Mel & Sue: Should Know By Now (Series 2)

Once again, lifelong friends and comedy legends Mel and Sue gather round the mic to ask each other the questions they’re too embarrassed to ask anyone else… The things in their life they really should know by now – but still absolutely do not. Along the way we’ll get facts (hopefully) and often-inappropriate anecdotes (definitely).

Episode 1: Bedsheets and Oven Buttons

How clean should your bedsheets be and does everyone know what every button and dial on their oven does?

Mel wonders if there’s an unwritten rule for how often you should change your bedsheets – should a Turin Shroud shaped mark of your husband on the sheets signify she’s doing it wrong? Sue in turn is ashamed to admit she basically only knows how to turn her oven on, off, and activate the self-cleaning function, but the rest is a mystery. Does this make her a bad cook?

Episode 2: Complaining and Ombudsmen

The very un-British art of complaining and does anyone, apart from a careers adviser, really know what an Ombudsman is or does?

Sue is going to have to take a running jump to get over her huge fear of upsetting anyone in order to learn the basics of how to raise a complaint. Luckily Mel’s no-nonsense, steely approach is here to help. Sue, in her own inimitable fashion repays the favour by explaining that no, an Ombudsman is not a jolly character in a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, but has a real and possibly even useful function for Mel personally.

Episode 3: Clothes and Ghosts

Should we know how to mend our own clothes in the face of Fast Fashion creating a growing pile of climate busting material waste? And if that’s not enough of a scary thought, who really, truly believes in ghosts?

Sue is a great crafter, she’s taught herself how to make stained glass and crocheted a hamburger for a Grayson Perry show, but actually mend her own clothes? Not yet. But should she know? Mel’s up for helping her find out how. What Mel’s not up for though is being scared. Spookily accurate tarot readings, ghosts, spirits from other worlds…in Mel’s mind all the supernatural beings are out to get her. Wait a minute…Did anyone else feel that?

Episode 4: Food glut and Football

How to preserve food in the face of rapidly approaching use by dates, and whether or not supporting football is all it’s cracked up to be.

No one likes waste, so Sue asks Mel what to do when she’s got too much food in the fridge and not enough time to use it. Pickling, preserving, freezing – what tips does Mel have, and what secret pickling recipes is she willing to share publicly? In exchange Mel wants Sue’s knowledge of the beautiful game. What are the highs and lows of trusting your happiness to a team of 12 men or women on a grassy pitch? And is it too late for Mel to nail her allegiance to a particular team without being branded a late adopter? Quick Sidebar – which team’s games should Mel attend to give the highest percentage chance of bumping into Hugh Grant? Just asking for a friend…

Episode 5: Stopcock and Compass

When the water starts coming out of nowhere – do YOU know where your stopcock is and what to do with it? And if you want to truly get in touch with your inner Bear Grylls, shouldn’t you know how a compass works?

Both Mel and Sue have suffered their way through various plumbing mishaps, and befriended an array of plumbers as a result – is it wrong, Sue wonders, that many of them have stayed for dinner? Mel is here to give practical advice on how to be prepared when your pipes blow and you’re minutes from starting an online Eurovision Quiz (niche example, but given how seriously Mel takes Eurovision, never have stakes been higher…). Sue is then all set to go into detail about how the Magnetic North works on a compass, before Mel makes the admission that she always thought West was on the right of the compass dial. Maybe it’s time to go back to basics?

Episode 6: Cheese and Tyres

How is cheese actually made, and do you know what to do when your tyre blows?

Hot on the heels of Mel’s question from Series 1 – ‘How does bread work’ – this time it’s the science behind cheese Mel’s after. They both love the stuff, but how easy is it to actually make at home…from this however the pair dream big, maybe their own brand cheddar is not such a distant dream?

Dreams of cheese maturing, Sue is then seeking answers on how to deal with a roadside breakdown, and specifically how to change a tyre, a question which Mel soon realises is more pertinent given the alarming regularity with which Sue lets her roadside assistance cover lapse. No fear! Mel is on hand to not only explain the basics but also make sure Sue is prepped for ANY kind of eventuality roadside. Kendal Mint Cake anyone?
