Vagabond Planet
Vagabond Planet: When a search for cosmic dust particles finds a particle bigger than Mars, the robot sent to explore finds life sheltering under the planet’s surface.
When researcher Charlotte Scott made the robot Lydia as a remote explorer, her doctoral adviser didn’t expect the project to find life. The planet Minerva had been slagged and cast away by the supernova explosion of its primary star. But the sub-surface life Lydia found was not only intelligent, it was 60,000 years older than its visitor’s civilization. On the other hand, the underground city was eventually doomed if its residents didn’t join a new planetary system.
Nearing Earth, with Charlotte’s team helping, Minerva’s residents establish an Embassy to interact with the United Nations of Earth. It it really an Embassy, or a landing-zone for an invasion? Can this situation be defused without conflict?
A problem from space is resolved with a solution in space, but even with heroic levels of diplomacy, everybody isn’t happy, yet. Life, for those on Earth, gets complicated really fast.
The researcher’s biological son, Webster, realizes what’s really going on, and finds the overlord who is being entertained by all of this drama. Soon, there are multiple overlords, but the original one has broken one rule too many, and that frees Charlotte’s family members to take over the controls and start steering things away from chaos. For the puppeteers who pull the strings of this reality, ‘complicated’ becomes an understatement, as some of the underdogs reveal that they are really overdogs.
Now, a new beginning lies ahead for most refugees from the long-ago disaster. Unless someone else interferes, that is—
